<div class="uc" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; clear: left; color: #555555; float: left; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 15px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
OK – so how do we create a model for student ministry that fits with
New City’s values of worship, community, mission, and theology and in a way
that also values diversity and Titus 2 older/younger ministry AND fits with our
current cultural context? Not only is
that a long sentence, but it is a very BIG question! In fact, it is a question that we expect to
ask over and over and over again as we constantly evaluate and re-evaluate how
well we are doing with our mission – to see the gospel transform everything
within our reach.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Here is where we are….</div>
<h3>
<b>
A midweek large gathering</b> of Middle and High School students @ The 567</h3>
<h3>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal;">Snacks/food/drinks/games and hang out time</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal;">Worship music</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal;">Short teaching re-cap of Sunday sermon geared toward students</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 12px; font-weight: normal;">Break into MC groups for personal discussion and
application</span></li>
</ul>
</h3>
<br />
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; mso-add-space: auto;">
<o:p> </o:p>* This format provides a LOT – 1) An
opportunity to experience <u>worship </u>together for students as well as to
hear more on a life of worship. 2) The
MCs provide an opportunity to move students into gospel centered <u>community</u>. The challenge will be to involve college
students/young adults/adults in the mix at every level in order to maintain the
Titus 2 generational diversity – but it is very possible. Like our existing MCs, we will work to see
real community develop – where life is lived together – at games, at the park,
serving, helping, laughing, crying… 3)
This format gives students a great avenue to BE <u>mission</u>al – inviting
friends who do not know Jesus or who are not connected to a church to join them
at New City. While intergenerational MCs
offered the same invite opportunity, there was little to attract other
students… ‘hey want to come hang out with my parents and talk about the sermon
from pastor Keith last week’ is not very attractional for middle and high school
students! A big part of being on mission
means serving… students would be encouraged and trained to serve others during
this time as part of the hospitality team, the set up team, the worship and
tech teams… 4) Having the sermon re-cap presented by a solid speaker in a way
that connects with students in their context and culture means more <u>theology</u>
for our students! Unpacking that
theology and applying it to the life of a student through their MC means more
practical theology. More theology means
more worship and a greater likelihood of gospel transformation!</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; mso-add-space: auto;">
<br /></div>
<h3>
<b>Sundays</b></h3>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; mso-add-space: auto;">
Students would participate, as they do
now in our main gathering. The hope,
however is that as students learn to serve in the mid-week student gathering,
they will also serve on Sunday mornings – as greeters, at the coffee bar, in
the tech area, and maybe in one of our bands.
This will help students stay connected to the body as a whole and will
also help them grow as disciples through service. Serving on a Sunday morning team also gives
another possible relationship for Titus 2, younger/older ministry.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; mso-add-space: auto;">
<br /></div>
<h3>
<b>Quarterly MC Partnership</b></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Like our existing MCs, student MCs would form ongoing missional
partnerships where they serve at least once per quarter in the city. Partnerships may, for example, be with a
needy school, a nursing home, or one of Macon’s shelters. The Partnership would be with an existing
non-student MC. By serving with another
MC we have more opportunities for the development of Titus 2 older/younger
relationships. This will also be another
way to keep our students connected with and a part of the body of New City
Church as opposed to a separate group within the church.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL40sO2IdZk29OrF8lCqRHwnXdNOGxkBP5dBUgJSjwClxyt4H9kTA8zuXYV2wjNjP283d1ZCQrRraRJS3TkYCTGFvHZEmFIRkWA_1I3WLeDIEKGiV5YacgUUzsTlRCzTLK65mOKrlGcmhB/s1600/core-values.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL40sO2IdZk29OrF8lCqRHwnXdNOGxkBP5dBUgJSjwClxyt4H9kTA8zuXYV2wjNjP283d1ZCQrRraRJS3TkYCTGFvHZEmFIRkWA_1I3WLeDIEKGiV5YacgUUzsTlRCzTLK65mOKrlGcmhB/s320/core-values.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="uc">
"If it ain't broke, <br />
don't fix it."<br />
<br />
But if it is broke, <br />
FIX IT!<br />
<br />
IT'S BROKE!<br />
Below is an explanation of New City's Core Values. These values shape <u>what</u> we do and <u>how</u> we do. Following each core value I'll explain how we have been less than successful with our attempted model of student ministry (integrated MCs).</div>
<div class="uc">
<br /></div>
<div class="uc">
<b>WORSHIP:</b></div>
<div class="uc">
<i>We exist to be worshippers of God. Understanding that God is our
Creator and Gracious Redeemer gives us purpose and direction in life.
Therefore, our desire is to proclaim the beauty and majesty of God – to show
that he is worthy of our worship in all we do and with all we are.</i></div>
<div class="uc">
> We all need to be reminded of the many ways that what/who we worship plays itself out in our day to day lives. If we love Jesus with all of our heart, mind, and soul (worship), then we will follow his commands. If we love (worship) anything else, we will pursue (follow) it/them. For example, if we love money more than Jesus, money becomes our pursuit - working too hard, stealing, illegal or dishonest gain...</div>
<div class="uc">
This needs to be communicated in in a language and environment that makes hearing and receiving it most likely. Sunday morning sermons is likely not the best environment or language for reaching students.</div>
<div class="uc">
<br />
<b>COMMUNITY</b>:</div>
<div class="uc">
<i>We are created to exist in community. As those created in the image
of God, we reflect the triune nature of God who exists in perfect community as
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This means that church is not intended to be a
loose collection of spiritually minded people, but a family of worshippers that
reflect the image of God, unified in Jesus. This community will be visible as
people love and serve each other and their neighbors. This is where the gospel
comes to life.</i></div>
<div class="uc">
> While the ideal of mom and dad being in community with others AND with their children is great, the reality is that it is VERY difficult in our culture. Families are dysfunctional. By only offering MCs that include the entire family, we are insisting that families join us in the ideal, rather than meeting them where they are and helping them grow into the ideal. It is ignoring context and culture to insist on the ideal. By doing this, there are many families - parents and students - that we will never reach and never move into community - the best place for Scriptures "one anothers" and discipleship. The reality of our attempt to integrate MCs with the whole family is that most of the children who attend an MC with mom and dad play with other kids rather than participating in an MC, or if the children are old enough, they simply stay home alone.<br />
The bottom line is that we are NOT connecting our students to community.</div>
<div class="uc">
<br /></div>
<div class="uc">
<b>MISSION:</b><i>We live as those who are sent—Just as the Father sent the Son into
the world, so too the Son has sent his church into the world. Therefore, to
live as a disciple means that we live on mission with Jesus. This will be
expressed as disciples adopt the posture of a missionary – to learn, listen to
and love the culture locally and globally. In doing so, the church announces
the salvation accomplished by the Son through the proclamation of the gospel
while working and praying for the advancement of God’s kingdom.</i></div>
<div class="uc">
> As I mentioned above, if we ignore our culture and context in an attempt to reach the ideal in one leap, there are many, many, many people that we will never be able to engage. For most people, becoming a follower of Christ and joining in His mission is a process, not a single "event." The process happens in community, not in isolation. If students (and parents) never engage in community, they are much less likely to engage in the process of transformation that begins with belief and moves to mission. We are neither reaching nor sending effectively in our current model of ministry.</div>
<div class="uc">
<br /></div>
<div class="uc">
<b>THEOLOGY:</b></div>
<div class="uc">
<i>We cannot properly worship, serve or proclaim a God that we do not
know. Therefore, we strive to create a culture devoted to Scriptural study in
order to help us grow in our love for Jesus and people. We must view the world
and culture through the story of the Scriptures. We realize that we must become
practical theologians if we are serious about being missional disciples in
today’s culture.</i></div>
<div class="uc">
> We all need more than the Sunday sermon in order to grow in our theology and especially in the practical application of our theology. Students live in a different world than adults! They often speak a little different language, deal with different problems, struggle with different sins, need to uproot different idols. Our current structures do very little to reach, shape, or apply the theology of our students. This means that rather than helping them grow as theologians through our MCs, we are in some ways hindering their growth as theologians. We want our students to know God (theology) because we believe that in knowing Him, they will love Him (worship) and in loving Him they will follow Him - right into community and right onto His mission!</div>
<div class="uc">
<br /></div>
<h3>
The Bottom Line: Our ministry to students is not working to instill our values and see our children transformed by the gospel. We need to fix that.</h3>

<b>Real always shapes Ideal</b>. Here's an example of what I mean:<br />
The US has thousands and thousands of children who need adoption. Ideally, Christian families would step up and adopt a child. If that happened, there would be no need for foster care. BUT then there is reality - every Christian home will not adopt a child in need of a home - many for very legitimate reasons. This reality means that we need foster homes and a system in place to care for the un-adopted children.<br />
<br />
Two years ago I wrote a series of posts that explained why New City Church, Macon would pursue the ideal of having students incorporated into our existing and new Missional communities. There have been some great stories about our students being ministered to and incorporated into the body of the church - there have been some successes... but reality is causing us to re-think and re-shape how we minister to students and families. The reality is that some existing parents are not at a place where they feel comfortable with their children sitting in on discussion (a great ideal) and many of the students don't feel comfortable participating in discussions with adults (another great ideal and application of Titus 2, and a reality of life in this culture and context). The results? <br />
Middle schoolers and high schoolers are not in Christian community. This means they are not receiving the input of older Christians (Titus 2), and they are often not participating in the missional partnerships of the MC.<br />
Another result is that we are missing missional opportunities to reach non-believing and non-connected students and their families. Students who aren't plugged in are not inviting other students. Parents who love their children and want Christian community for their children don't connect at New City as readily because the reality is that our ministry to students isn't thriving.<br />
<br />
<b>So the reality is - We are not ministering well to our existing students and we are missing out on missional opportunities to reach both students and parents. </b>The past few weeks we have begun great discussions on how to correct course - minister well to students and be missional in our city, and do this without compromising our values of Worship, Mission, Community (including Titus 2 diversity), and Theology. Look for more explanation in the days to come! I am excited to re-think student ministry and to find a way to keep our ideals, even if reality reshapes our practice. keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-42510184118249999132013-02-08T11:06:00.000-05:002013-02-08T11:17:21.306-05:00Planting the Gospel<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have heard more than once that planting churches isn't really planting churches as much as it is, or should be, planting the Gospel.<br />
I agree. Planting a church should be about planting the gospel and seeing it grow a gospel-centered church. BUT planting churches is only ONE way to plant the gospel in an area or a city.<br />
<a href="http://www.newcitychurchmacon.org/">New City Church</a> is committed to church planting, but more, we are committed to planting the gospel. So we are talking, praying, and working toward other ways to plant the gospel in Middle Georgia. <br />
One of those ways is by planting gospel-centered MEN in Middle Georgia. We just finished up a class led by Cameron Barham, one of our New City, Macon elders, to teach guys how to preach. This was what I would consider a seminary level preaching course and included men from <a href="http://newcitywr.org/">New City Church, Warner Robins</a>, <a href="http://newcitymilledgeville.org/">New City Church, Milledgeville</a>, and New City Church, Macon. Our hope is to plant these men in the pulpits of existing Middle Georgia churches as pulpit supply for churches who need a preacher to cover a short period of time, as interim pastors for churches seeking a pastor, and as long term pastors to shepherd congregations in the gospel for years to come.<br />
Yesterday one of our New City, Macon partners, Damon Gardzelewski became the lead pastor of Bloomfield Gardens Baptist Church in Macon. I have initiated conversations with a few other local churches recently on behalf of another New City, Macon partner who is ready and able to serve as a lead pastor. In addition I recently offered our guys as pulpit supply for a couple of small local congregations looking for a pastor. We are praying that God would use these men to plant the gospel throughout Middle Georgia. Would you pray that with us?<br />

Last November I finally went for a physical exam. JOY. The doc checked me...pretty thoroughly and then gave me the news... "everything looks pretty good for someone your age (WHAT?), but your blood pressure is high and you need to lose weight" (the truth is I already knew that I was overweight and that my blood pressure was high). "Start eating better and get some exercise," is what he left me with.<br />
So I did.<br />
I finally gave in to a friend's persistence and joined <a href="http://www.northmaconcrossfit.com/">North Macon Crossfit</a>. I started eating a little less and cut out a lot of sugar and carbs. I lost weight. My blood pressure went down, and I feel pretty good most days (which is probably good for someone my age). I even convinced Amy to start working out with me - one of the best ideas I have ever had.<br />
I am blogging this as a shout out to all of the North Macon Crossfit crew - thanks for not laughing too loud at my early work outs... heck, my current work outs! And as a shout out to Amy - thanks for joining me, and keeping me going. This is no resolution, but I am resolved in staying in shape for a long, long time!keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-38085228653021130122013-01-03T14:53:00.000-05:002013-01-03T15:03:14.992-05:00A New Year... <span style="font-size: large;">Every January 1, we get to start over. 2012 proved to be a difficult year on many levels and a year filled with major changes - staff changes at New City, adding 2 children to the family through foster care, losing some terrific families from New City because of moves... While not all of the changes were bad, this year, maybe more than any year I can remember, I feel happy, glad, joyful to leave 2012 and enter a new year. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">It feels like a fresh start.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Maybe today has helped the start of 2013 feel fresh - our new <a href="http://www.newcitymacon.org/">web site</a> is up and running, a beautiful new series of photographs fills the art gallery, I just met with Ryan and Andy to outline the new sermon series - Freedom, a study of Galatians, Charlie Colgan our newest New City team member is here, he joined us for the sermon series outline this morning, we are one step closer to a new New City Church site, and I am blogging. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">A fresh start.</span><br />

<span style="font-weight: normal;">I don't ride horses, but from what I understand from Ivey there is definitely a right way to jump and a wrong way. </span></div>
<div>
<b>The Right Way - </b>As rider and horse begin to approach the jump the rider makes sure that they are lined up for the jump. Then the rider makes certain that the horse's stride is right for the obstacle.<br />
As the horse begins its jump, the rider has a firm grip on the horse and is already looking ahead to the next jump. Looking ahead to the next jump gives direction to the horse upon landing. Notice Ivey in the photo - the horse is just taking off and already she is looking ahead for the next obstacle.</div>
<div>
Once the horse and rider have landed, the rider leads to the next obstacle, lines up the obstacle, sets the stride, and at take off is looking ahead for the next obstacle.</div>
<div>
<b>The Wrong Way - </b><br />
Ivey had to learn to trust her self and her horse when they took off on a jump. That trust allows her to not focus all of her attention on the landing but to look ahead for the next obstacle. If all of her attention were focused on the landing, the horse upon landing would lack direction. Without a specific desired and communicated direction the horse could veer almost anywhere and would likely slow down. This causes the rider and horse to have to work harder to get back on track and in stride. This is all terrible for a smooth and consistent ride that yields a good score.</div>
<h3>
<b>What does that have to do with leadership?</b></h3>
<div>
Leadership is similar in many ways. <br />
Think of the event, or project as the jump or obstacle. The event or project doesn't just happen on the due date, there is a lot of planning and work that goes into making it happen - lining up the jump, setting the stride. As a the LEADER you give the team direction. You set the pace and establish the stride. How quickly will this need to happen? When do we speed up? When do we slow down? What are the capabilities of the team? Who can do what?<br />
Then there is the event or project itself. When all the work has gone in and the project or event is ready to go you jump. A LEADER doesn't let go of the reins during the jump. That would be disastrous! Like the rider, you must maintain a firm grip on what is happening.</div>
<div>
With trust in the work that has taken place before the "jump" and the team that is launching, a LEADER must look past the landing to visualize what happens next. What is the next obstacle? Where do we go next? How do we best get there? A good LEADER maintains direction and pace for the whole team.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Take a look at the picture again. Is that how you are leading?</div>keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-74057781619595332112012-02-20T14:10:00.001-05:002012-02-20T14:10:34.231-05:00B I G Changes - Right people / Right Seat<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b><span style="font-size: large;">Jim Collins, leadership guru, teaches that it isn't enough to have the right people on the bus - they must also be in the right seat.</span></b><br />
<br />
Translation - Your leadership must not only be on board, but they have to be in the right place. The New City Elders feel like we have taken a couple of BIG steps toward having the right people in the right seats... <b>Ryan Lyons will be moving from Milledgeville to Warner Robins to take the role of Lead Pastor. Andy Blankenship will be moving from Albany to take the Lead Pastor role in Milledgeville </b>(putting New City Albany plans on hold indefinitely). <br />

New City Church is a multi-congregational church seeking to see the gospel transform Middle Georgia and beyond. Currently, we have three New City Church congregations – Macon, Milledgeville, and Warner Robins. Our goal is for each of these congregations to have a Lead Pastor and congregational elders who will lead and shepherd their particular congregation. Currently, I am the Lead Pastor at New City Church Milledgeville and Keith Watson is the Lead Pastor at New City Church Downtown. Up until now, we have not had a Lead Pastor for New City Church Warner Robins.</div>
<div class="uc" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
After much prayer and consideration, along with unanimous agreement among all New City Church elders, it has been decided that I will begin serving as the Lead Pastor at New City Church Warner Robins. Andy Blankenship, who has been serving with us for a number of weeks, will soon become the Lead Pastor at New City Church Milledgeville, taking my place.</div>
<div class="uc" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
This transition – Andy becoming the Lead Pastor at New City Church Milledgeville – will happen over the next few months. I will remain the Lead Pastor of New City Church Milledgeville for the immediate future, but Andy will immediately begin serving alongside me in Milledgeville, like a “co-pastor.” He will begin preaching at least 50% of the time and will be utilizing his time in Milledgeville to build relationships with the New City Church Milledgeville congregation. Andy will also be “learning the ropes” during this time in order to ensure as smooth of a transition of leadership as possible. If all goes well, Andy and his family will be living in Milledgeville by May and Andy will be ready to assume full responsibilities as Lead Pastor of New City Church Milledgeville by early June.</div>
<div class="uc" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
On a personal note, this decision has been very difficult for Lori and me. We are grateful for the opportunity we have been given to plant and lead New City Church Milledgeville and we genuinely love each and every one of you who are a part of New City Church. While it is difficult to cease being the Lead Pastor of New City Church Milledgeville, there are at least three reasons why I am comfortable with and confident about this decision.</div>
<ol class="uc" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 45px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li class="uc" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">I am confident that this is the Lord’s will and will help us advance our mission of seeing greater gospel influence in Middle Georgia and beyond. Lori and I believe the Lord is leading us to make this move, and the other elders of New City Church have affirmed that leading. </li>
<li class="uc" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">I am leaving you in good hands with Andy Blankenship. Over the last few months I have been privileged to get to know Andy and his family better. Andy loves Jesus, loves the mission of New City, and is committed to laboring to see the gospel continue to transform Milledgeville. He will lead you well and I am thankful that God sent him to us. </li>
<li class="uc" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">I am still a part of New City Church, meaning that we are still a part of the same larger organization and I am still working side by side with you, just in a different position, to see gospel transformation in Middle Georgia and beyond. </li>
</ol>
<div class="uc" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Please be in prayer as we work through this transition. Pray for Andy and his family, for my family and me, and for unity for our congregation. Pray that our mission of seeing the gospel transform everything within our reach will continue to be advanced in Milledgeville, Warner Robins, Macon, and beyond.</div>
<div class="uc" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-image: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin-bottom: 10px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

When we planted <a href="http://www.newcitydowntown.org/">New City Church downtown</a>, we didn't just want to be a church located downtown. We wanted to be a church involved in our city's renewal... a church engaging its culture... a church celebrating creativity and engaging creatives. Today is day 3 of 4 for <a href="http://maconfilmfestival.com/index">The Macon Georgia Film Festival</a> and through <a href="http://the567.org/">The 567</a> we get to play a huge role in this growing film festival.<br />
I am thrilled to see downtown changing. I am thrilled that as a church planted right smack in the middle of downtown, we participate in its change. While we don't have it all figured out, and while we do make mistakes and miss opportunities, I am thrilled to say that we are not just a church in our city... <b>we are truly a church With and For Our City!</b>keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-18608338128630787302012-01-18T10:23:00.001-05:002012-01-18T10:23:47.805-05:00Much to Celebrate - New City turns 4!<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

January 2008 - New City Church held its first weekly gathering at The Cox Capitol Theater... it seems like yesterday in so many ways. Who would show up? Would we receive enough in offerings to rent the facilities for another week? Could our volunteers set up and tear down and man all of the stations, not just once but every week? Could we really do this? Those and a thousand similar questions.<br />
Well, we did it - purely by God's great grace!<br />
Over these 4 years we have seen some amazing fruit - marriages saved and families restored; homeless addicts healed; de-churched re-churched, unbelievers becoming believers, mended families, lots of new children (probably as many adopted as born!), and a great impact through us and The 567 on our downtown community... all by God's great grace.<br />
Just over 4 years ago 40 people (including kids) believed that God wanted to do something through a new church in Macon - one of the most churched cities in the US. Together we dreamed of seeing the gospel radically impact lives - we dreamed of transformed people, a transformed city, and beyond. More than a Sunday gathering, we dreamed of true community - people doing life together - seeking, striving, growing, serving, loving - in true community.<br />
Today those 40 have become well over 600 - today that 1 gathering has turned into 3 congregations in 3 cities - today the dream of community has turned into 15 Missional Communities with 5 about to plant and more in the planning stages - today our home base is a 12,000 sf building in the heart of downtown that we renovated - it serves as not only the home of New City Church but also as a true community center for downtown Macon... all by God's great grace.<br />
Don't get the idea that it has all been easy and always beautiful, it hasn't. Sadly over 4 years we have lost many of our core families and friends for various reasons - some destroyed by sin, others discontent with the difficulties of planting, and a few who realized they weren't dreaming the same dreams that we were. Each has been painful. But God's great grace has been sufficient.<br />
We have much to celebrate at New City Church - downtown, Milledgeville, and Warner Robins... we have much more in mind for 2012... and by God's great grace we will be celebrating even more in January 2013! Thank you God for your great grace - thank you New City volunteers and missionaries for dreaming, believing, and working to see the gospel transform everything within your reach.keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-43831304917380508232012-01-10T09:05:00.002-05:002012-01-10T09:05:39.898-05:00New City Planting makes the Paper<br />

Fifty families from Warner Robins and surrounding
communities who were attending a Macon church were sent in August to start New

The group had been attending New City Downtown (Macon) and
had already begun meeting during the week in area home groups they call

Patrick McConnell serves as pastor of the new church. He
said New City Church Downtown was begun in Macon about four years ago by Keith

Though McConnell said the Warner Robins church will not

“We have three missional communities in Warner Robins now

They are people on a mission to do life together and serve the wider community
with the gospel and by being good neighbors.”</div>

“When you look at New City Church Downtown and the heartbeat
there, you jump to arts and business,” McConnell said. “Here it looks a lot
different because it’s just not the same. We still want to be a light, but our
missional communities are doing different things throughout the community. We
all share the same philosophy to impact our cities through the gospel.”</div>

affiliated with John McArthur’s Grace Community Church. I did youth work and
co-pastored.”</div>

The move will provide them with enough space to go from 3 services to 1. The move will also allow them to expand their mission and be much more inclusive of families... good stuff.<br />
<br />
Warner Robins continues to grow and will be adding 1 new MC this month and possibly another around March. We are planning for 2012 and hope to see a real push to grow our core and work toward launching Sunday morning services in our own space.<br />
<br />
Downtown (Macon) is going great as well. We sent out about 50 people in August of last year to Warner Robins and have seen our downtown attendance continue to grow - even averaging MORE in attendance in 2011 than 2010 even though we sent 50 people to start a new congregation.<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">AND</span></b><br />
<span style="font-size: large; font-weight: bold;">we are in the planning stages for a second site in Macon</span>. Crazy, I know. We are praying and working toward the possibility of a January 2013 launch. We have tons of unanswered questions and a lot that needs to happen before we could do it.<br />
<br /><br />
To help people understand our next Macon plant (WHY, HOW, WHAT...) and encourage other churches to take steps toward planting, I started a new blog - <b><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://newcityplanting.blogspot.com/search/label/About">New City Planting</a></span></b> . The organization works for the revitalization of Downtown Macon through access to music and the arts, educational and small business assistance, and city beautification. On Wednesday the small business assistance piece of the puzzle falls into place with the Grand Openings of three businesses - Beckenfield Fragrances, Inc., MO’S Cleaning Services, Inc. and Visibly Creative.</p> <p>Beckenfield Fragrances, Inc. features a specialty line called Valor – Candles For Men which offers an exceptional line of masculine scented candles and other manly inspired products. The Valor brand celebrates manhood by offering fragrances inspired by places or events that are typically considered to be manly in nature. “Every great experience has a story. My goal was to capture the essence of those stories by triggering the sense of smell, which is tied to memory and emotion. Scent can often enable us to re-live the positive feelings associated with great experiences," says Johnny Rohrbeck, founder.</p> <p>Myra Omofoma, a resident of the Macon Housing Authority (MHA) for three years, is now the proud owner/operator of a micro-business, a domestic cleaning service, Mo's Cleaning Services, Inc. Her company strives to be “green” and Omofoma implements, manages, and audits cleaning processes and procedures to avoid using potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals and contaminants that may adversely affect air quality, human health, and the environment. She has hired several employees from the Georgia Department of Labor, Goodwill Industries/Helm Institute, and other residents from the Macon Housing Authority. </p> <p>Visibly Creative specializes in custom website development campaigns including branding, design, coding, and marketing. Owner, Eric Mayfield also offers social media packages, onsite consultation, search engine marketing and optimization, mobile app development and training for all internet technology. New customers receive a 30 minute free consultation.</p> <p>“These innovative ways of thinking and doing business will only continue to strengthen the business mix we have in Downtown Macon. The incubator space provides services that often make it daunting for an entrepreneur when considering a start-up and The 567 is changing the landscape for these folks. It allows them to follow their dreams and in turn makes Macon a better to place to do business,” say Mechel McKinley, Main Street Macon Manager.</p> <p>For more information about The 567 Center for Renewal visit their website at <a href="file://www.the567.org/">www.the567.org</a>. </p> <p align="center" style="text-align:center">###</p>keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-54939460012628580172011-11-11T09:33:00.005-05:002011-11-11T10:08:36.357-05:00Obstacles that Limit Church Planting<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/BrickWall.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 205px; height: 154px;" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/BrickWall.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; ">New City Church is a church planting church. We believe that one of the best ways to reach new people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ is through church planting. We do and will aggressively seek ways to plant new churches... but there are obstacles! Below is an article addressing some of those obstacles, or Limiting Factors. <b>Money </b>and <b>Training </b>seem to be two of the most common factors... and two of the factors that have been on my mind.<br />* This post is not meant to be an endorsement of MentorNet, but is meant to stir further thought on overcoming church planting obstacles.<br />_________________________________</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; ">MentorNet #43<br />Factors Limiting Sustaining Church Planting Movements<br />Copyright © 2006 by Galen Currah and George Patterson<br />May be freely copied, translated, posted, and distributed.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><b>1. Limiting factor:</b> Many church planters are young men without jobs who must be supported by a limited source of funds that often come from outside of the region they serve.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><b>Remedy:</b> Enlist as church planters more persons who already have an income and who would qualify as a shepherding elder as defined by the New Testament.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><o:p> </o:p><b>2. Limiting factor:</b> If church planters are trained only in occasional workshops or academies held during the day, then those who work during the day cannot attend them. Thus, only single young people are trained, bypassing ‘elder types’ who support themselves and have the maturity required in many communities to reach serious-minded heads of families.<br /><b>Remedy: </b>Supplement class-room type training with mentoring that is available to all, such as is described under “Mentor New Leaders” from www.MentorAndMultiply.com.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><b>3. Limiting factor:</b> Church planters who are volunteers and self-supported often have jobs or businesses that do not let them travel far.<br /><b>Remedy:</b> Let paid or professional church planters start only the first two or three churches in a region, as they are able to travel afar. Thereafter, let these churches send some of their own members to plant the rest of the churches nearby in their region. The most effective church planting teams normally are composed of members of a nearby 'mother' church of the same culture. Such members usually have friends and relatives living where they plant daughter churches. This type of churchFactors Limiting Sustaining Church Planting Movements 2 reproduction is described under “Start, Develop and Renew God's Flocks” at www.MentorAndMultiply.com.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><b>4. Limiting factor:</b> New churches often have new leaders with only a minimal amount of training and Bible knowledge.<br /><b>Remedy:</b> Enable all shepherds to fulfill their biblical duty of mentoring the new leaders of their daughter churches in the same way that Jesus and the apostle Paul did, as also described under “Mentor New Leaders” at www.MentorAndMultiply.com.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><b>5. Limiting factor: </b>Missionaries and church planters often lack experience in a type of mentoring that is both biblical and 'menu-driven,' which meets urgent needs of new churches, and is geared to rapid church reproduction.<br /><b>Remedies: </b>1) Ask a mentor to help you start mentoring. The mentors listed under “Select a Mentor Skilled in your Area” at www.MentorAndMultiply.com charge no fees (unless being mentored for academic credit). They will stay with you, helping you to think through your plans, until you see churches multiply.<br />2) Teach and apply biblical guidelines of Christian mentoring. See “Tasks of a Christian mentor and Mentoring 'Chains' in Scripture” under “Mentor New Leaders” at www.MentorAndMultiply.com.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><b>6. Limiting factor:</b> Mentoring the way Jesus and Paul did it proves too time-consuming to continue doing indefinitely.<br /><b>Remedy:</b> Like Jesus and Paul's apprentices, your trainees must be weaned from intensive mentoring as soon as their churches are practicing the vital ministries that are required by the New Testament. These trainees, in turn, must by now have the confidence and skills to mentor other, newer leaders of their daughter churches or cells. Trainees can then receive ongoing training in more conventional forms such as workshops, personal reading and classroom instruction. Just take care not to force institutional training on the newer leaders.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><b>Conclusion<br /></b>Sustaining a church planting movement requires ongoing training of church planters and shepherds. In many movements, especially where churches must multiply under severe restrictions, mentoring as done in the ways that Christ and Paul did it, does in fact sustain the movement.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><b><a href="http://paul-timothy.net/mentornet/pdf/mentornet43.pdf">See the entire article HERE.</a></b></p>keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-37334332489067796382011-11-04T12:18:00.004-04:002011-11-04T12:48:46.319-04:00Finding Bigfoot... in a Missional Community<a href="http://fogsmoviereviews.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/findingbigfootteam1.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 188px;" src="http://fogsmoviereviews.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/findingbigfootteam1.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a>Earlier this week I had a little chill time at home. Ivey and Robby were doing homework and Amy was helping. That left me and Elijah - and a little TV time. After a few minutes of channel surfing, trying to find something I could watch with Elijah, he chose his show with excitement... Finding Bigfoot.<div>OK, I thought... "maybe there is something interesting here." That lasted for about 5 minutes. Then my thoughts included: "This is the dumbest show I have ever seen," and "surely this isn't real." I moved on to silently wonder, "do people actually watch this?" and "do they think week after week after week - MAYBE this will be the week that they actually FIND Bigfoot?" Meanwhile, Elijah is loving it! The night searches scare him. The people talking about what they saw in the woods captivates him. He loves it... cuddled next to me he loves it. He's 8. I didn't love it... not the show... not for a whole hour! But I do love Elijah. And I enjoy seeing him happy. And sometimes he just needs to sit and talk, and laugh, and be scared with daddy. So for Elijah, and enjoyment of him - I watched the entire episode!</div><div>At New City Church we value life lived in community... a diverse community... we believe that this community should be racially diverse, culturally diverse, socio-economically diverse, and age/stage of life diverse. THIS should describe our <a href="http://keithwatson.blogspot.com/2011/08/what-is-missional-community.html">Missional Communities</a> (MCs). Sometimes living in that diversity is tough as one group or age may enjoy things that others don't. One group may want to do things, see things, talk about things that are as important to others. BUT learning from one another and living in this diversity is a) the biblical example for church, b) the best way/place for the "one anothers" of Scripture to be lived out, and c) according to the apostle Paul is the way that best exhibits to creation the manifold wisdom of God in the Gospel.</div><div>So - how with the difficulties associated with diversity do MCs work?</div><div>Like Finding Bigfoot with me and Elijah.</div><div>For the good and unity of the community and our own good and for the glory of God, we sometimes set ourselves and our desires aside and put others first. Paul said it this way in Philippians 2:</div><div><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><b></b></p><blockquote><b>3</b>Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. <b>4</b>Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. <b>5</b> Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus</blockquote><p></p></div>keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-56248578827847725232011-11-01T09:44:00.006-04:002011-11-01T15:03:24.008-04:00The New South Needs Church Plants<a href="http://www.portlandtribune.com/news_graphics/116346280839879600.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 194.6px; height: 127px;" src="http://www.portlandtribune.com/news_graphics/116346280839879600.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><b>As High As 450... that's the number of churches in Macon</b>, more per capita than any city in the South and by some accounts more than any city in the US. With all of those churches it would seem that Macon must be the most churched city in the US, but it is far from it. This Sunday and estimated 75% of Macon's population will sleep in.<div><br /></div><div><b>If Macon statistics are similar to National statistics:</b><br />* 80% of those 450 churches have plateaued or are declining,<br />* "growing" <u>established</u> churches receive 80-90% of their new people as transfers from an existing church,</div><div>* and the percentage of those <u>claiming</u> to be Christian will continue to decline (87% in 1990, 76% 2008).</div><div><br /></div><div>Sadly, I once read that 95% of existing churches are unable to change their DNA. This means that they are unable to change methodologies and styles (not theology) in order to meet the challenges and changes of our world. </div><div><br /></div><div>That's why New City Church plants churches... even in a city with more churches per capita than any city in the South, and thats why we will plant more... to engage a changing culture with the unchanging Gospel of Jesus Christ. R. Kirby Godsey<a href="http://www.massbible.org/files/images/is_god_a_christian.jpg?1315324430" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 195px; height: 294px;" src="http://www.massbible.org/files/images/is_god_a_christian.jpg?1315324430" border="0" alt="" /></a>As soon as I learned of Dr. Godsey's new book, I ordered it. I was anxious to read it though I expected us to differ on numerous points. I was anxious because I expected to be challenged by Dr. Godsey. For those who do not know who Dr. Godsey is, he served as the 17th President of Mercer University here in Macon. Dr. Godsey was a great president who did many, many good things for Mercer University, though he was often in trouble for his teachings on Christianity with the Southern baptists who supported Mercer. Agree with Dr. Godsey or disagree, he has been viewed as a brilliant and influential man. So my expectations were that the book would be equally brilliant and influential.<div>It was not. It was a sad disappointment. It was filled with flawed logic and half truths concerning the Christian faith that Dr. Godsey claims to associate himself with. While I expected our views to be different, I didn't expect what I read - over-generalizations and misrepresentations.</div><div>I am sorry to say that this book will not bring most evangelical Christians to the table for honest discussion because it is less than honest about evangelical Christianity. My last word here... disappointing.</div><div><br /></div><div>Let me give you a couple of examples of what I mean:</div><div>In the Preface: "We seem eager to believe that God is only on our side. Scholars know better. Theologians know better. Most preachers know better." Where does Dr. Godsey get his information that "most" scholars, theologians, and preachers know better? Is he insinuating that we (theologians and preachers, and scholars) teach and preach something that we know is not true?</div><div><br /></div><div>He follows that with an accusation that we are teaching congregations to be exclusive and mean-spirited. All of this he ties to the teaching of exclusivity in Christianity.</div><div><br /></div><div>Pg 21 - "Christians need to get over it. Jesus is not God's only word." Jesus is then equated as a word of God with creation, Adam, Mother Teresa, Muhammad, Pope John XXIII, Gandhi, MLK, the Qur'an and more. Godsey never really explains what he means but does say that to disagree with him by claiming that any word is THE WORD of God or from God is "a form of myopic self-centeredness that presumes to place ourselves-our vision and our understanding - at the center of God's universe."</div><div><br /></div><div>Further - pg 22 - anyone who believes "that Christianity alone or Muslims alone have sole access to the ultimate reality that underlies the meaning of the universe" is irrational. Really? Why? Why can someone not have truth? </div><div><br /></div><div>One last one: pg 23 - "Jesus showed us that we really come alive only when we see beyond ourselves to our essential connectedness to one another, including Muslims and Jews and Buddhists and others." No reference to Jesus' actual teaching is given. Probably because there is none.</div>keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-44616857685716903192011-09-28T13:06:00.003-04:002011-09-28T13:45:53.264-04:00Shared Leadership is Hard<a href="http://www.pacificcohistory.org/sw2003_2_09a.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 222px; height: 153px;" src="http://www.pacificcohistory.org/sw2003_2_09a.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a>New City Church is led by a team of elders. Our elders are equal in authority. This means that our elder team makes decisions together and all share an equal "vote" on the decisions we share in leading the church. As New City church downtown's Lead Pastor I am considered the "first among equals." This simply means that I lead the team of elders who govern and shepherd New City Church. I am first among EQUALS which means that while I may lead our Elders, we are still equal. I have no more authority than any other elder. My vote carries the same weight as his vote. We believe that this best describes the example of church leadership, and elder specific leadership that is described in Scripture... but this isn't a post on how we are structured as much as it is on how hard this sometimes is. <div>Most church planters make all or almost all of the decisions of the church in its first days, months, and even years. A leadership team of some sort (external elders who are not a part of the plant, internal leadership who are not yet elders...) is put in place to help in decisions and offer wisdom, but most often the decision rests on the planter. I am not saying that this is right or wrong, only that it is largely a fact. </div><div>Over time the elder team develops from within the church - as it has at New City. As the elder team grows (and it should) it also becomes more diverse (as it also should). Now decisions are shared. With diversity comes differences of opinion, different informational needs in order to make decisions, schedule conflicts, time conflicts (especially for lay-elders), and sometimes just plain conflict! All of this often leads seemingly to a slowing of forward motion and loss of energy as decision making on larger items requires much more effort, longer discussions, the acquisition of more and more information, and much more time.</div><div>It would be much simpler and much faster as well as less draining if one man (read if "I") just made the decisions. There is truth to that. It would be simpler, and faster... and much more dangerous. Shared leadership is hard - this transition can be very frustrating and draining... but it is good and necessary. Team leadership brings wisdom that one person doesn't have. It brings perspective that no single leader can possess. It brings options that and solutions that one leader may never have thought of. It brings accountability that not only protects the body of Christ, but also protects each leader. Shared leadership is hard, but it is good.</div><div><br /></div><div>I write this for any planter who hasn't made it to this point! The transition is hard. But it will be and is worth it.</div>keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-84100456253885101652011-08-15T11:02:00.004-04:002011-08-15T11:35:40.971-04:00Sometimes Subtraction is really Multiplication<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj3vaqr27H6TIz8dowsgnOsSxPZsCtF8J127L7EUmoFXxcqp1_ST7c3p1tiftyHdjrOGSheHXzd8XMkyguLBh3WyNJdyp4pLnlxl0f55G2Xh2_RBxZcYcJy3Jm-mFEam97EpTByOk9pQt3/s1600/multiplication.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 143px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj3vaqr27H6TIz8dowsgnOsSxPZsCtF8J127L7EUmoFXxcqp1_ST7c3p1tiftyHdjrOGSheHXzd8XMkyguLBh3WyNJdyp4pLnlxl0f55G2Xh2_RBxZcYcJy3Jm-mFEam97EpTByOk9pQt3/s200/multiplication.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641106102847067106" /></a>Ten months ago, New City Church downtown was a single campus, not quite three years old. We seemed to finally be pushing to or through the 200 mark in regular attendance (one of the growth barriers in church world). A month later we sent out around 25 regular attendees to launch New City Church Milledgeville.<div>Rebounding growth began slowly... until late this summer we were again pushing through the 200 barrier with some consistency. Then came August 14, 2011 when at age of 3 years and 8 months we sent out 50 regular attending, hard working, giving, people who are sold out on the mission and vision of New City Church to plant New City Church Warner Robins...</div><div>So if we looked at the numbers of subtraction (after all we are subtracting!) we would see:</div><div>200-25 = 175 -50 = 125... all in the span of 9 months...</div><div>
<br /></div><div><b>But sometimes Subtraction is really Multiplication!</b></div><div>With most of our Mercer University crowd not back yet, downtown was at 170 yesterday.</div><div>The new Warner Robins campus was at 125 (send out 50, get 125?!?!)</div><div>Milledgeville on move in weekend ExPlOdED! 380</div><div>Let's see... 170 + 125 + 380 = 675</div><div>
<br /></div><div>By subtracting 75, we have almost tripled in attendance... which means we have almost tripled in influence, in opportunity, and in the number of potential missionaries that we can equip to advance the Kingdom! Incredible.</div><div>I am about #s - it is true - in that numbers represent people, and I love to see people transformed by Jesus through the gospel! And the more people I see being transformed by his radical love and work, the more excited I get.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>I am amazed at the work that God is doing in our midst. I give him all of the credit (glory) for what is happening in and through New City Church... and I am enjoying the ride!</div><div> </div>keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4683017685713970502.post-29994235402602425802011-08-11T09:14:00.005-04:002011-08-11T09:47:28.382-04:00Our MC is bigger than some churches!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdT0RO4FGpk3rMy2LbXMa34ZfODTAhTPDPAe8pEixfZuq3MVslRV6DS32dE0RDbWK1YBLdw5kpXzck8V0GT_fbJ0pO-8Hr3Py0xY6-eZ4xv2RxF4655FTBbVCsoFL5RoZaJsuVolpCPpY-/s1600/new+weaver+4.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdT0RO4FGpk3rMy2LbXMa34ZfODTAhTPDPAe8pEixfZuq3MVslRV6DS32dE0RDbWK1YBLdw5kpXzck8V0GT_fbJ0pO-8Hr3Py0xY6-eZ4xv2RxF4655FTBbVCsoFL5RoZaJsuVolpCPpY-/s200/new+weaver+4.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5639594397763226562" /></a>New City Church's attendance for it's launch in January 2008 was 100 people. Of that 100, we probably had a strong core of about 50 - including children! And yes, our children were strong, attending weekly and being involved in most everything that we did. <div>A month ago we started a new <a href="http://keithwatson.blogspot.com/2011/08/what-is-missional-community.html">Missional Community</a>. I am co-leading with a couple - Amy and Justin Weaver. Last night we met and with several of our core folks absent we had another packed house with more first timers - exciting! The problem is, the MC is already too big! Though we can all squeeze into the house (as long as some people don't make that night and it isn't raining so the younger crowd can run and play outside), there is no way that we can get to know one another well, have good, full, gospel discussion, and there is no room to grow - hard to be missional when there isn't room for new-comers. </div><div>
<br /></div><div><b>Our new MC is bigger than the core that planted New City Church! </b></div><div><b>
<br /></b></div><div><b>That is AMAZING</b> - I would never have imagined that many people right from the start. AND we have 9 other MCs!</div><div><b>It is exciting</b> - not just because of the numbers, but because it is evident in our discussions that Gospel transformation is happening... Jesus is being worshiped and followed.</div><div><b>It is overwhelming</b> - we need to add at least 2 more MCs <u>TODAY</u>, and we aren't ready.</div><div>Wow.</div>keithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07437465320810685997noreply@blogger.com
